[5:5]  1 tn Heb “and it will become [a place for] grazing.” בָּעַר (baar, “grazing”) is a homonym of the more often used verb “to burn.”

[5:5]  2 tn Heb “and it will become a trampled place” (NASB “trampled ground”).

[26:9]  3 tn Heb “with my soul I.” This is a figure for the speaker himself (“I”).

[26:9]  4 tn Or “long for, desire.” The speaker acknowledges that he is eager to see God come in judgment (see vv. 8, 9b).

[26:9]  5 tn The translation understands צֶדֶק (tsedeq) in the sense of “justice,” but it is possible that it carries the nuance “righteousness,” in which case one might translate, “those who live in the world learn to live in a righteous manner” (cf. NCV).

[29:14]  6 tn Heb “Therefore I will again do something amazing with these people, an amazing deed, an amazing thing.” This probably refers to the amazing transformation predicted in vv. 17-24, which will follow the purifying judgment implied in vv. 15-16.

[29:14]  7 tn Heb “the wisdom of their wise ones will perish, the discernment of their discerning ones will keep hidden.”

[41:4]  8 tn Heb “Who acts and accomplishes?”; NASB “Who has performed and accomplished it.”

[41:4]  9 tn The interrogative particle is understood by ellipsis (note the preceding line).

[41:4]  10 tn Heb “I, the Lord, [am with] the first, and with the last ones I [am] he.”

[42:13]  11 tn Heb “like a man of war he stirs up zeal” (NIV similar).

[42:13]  12 tn Or perhaps, “he triumphs over his enemies” (cf. NIV); NLT “will crush all his enemies.”

[48:14]  13 sn This probably refers to the idol gods (see v. 5).

[48:14]  14 tn Or “friend,” or “covenant partner.”

[48:14]  sn The Lord’s ally is a reference to Cyrus.

[48:14]  15 tn Heb “and his arm [against] the Babylonians.”
